Lafayette and Baton Rouge homeowners
A FORTIFIED roof is a financial decision. Here is the honest math.
Louisiana rewards stronger roofs three different ways: insurance discounts required by law, a state income tax credit you may qualify for, and a Fortify Homes Program grant that may be offered when a round is open. Each layer has its own rules, and most of what circulates about them is stale.
This site keeps the three layers straight and sends you to the agency for the numbers, because program amounts and eligibility change: the Louisiana Department of Insurance for the grant, the Department of Revenue bulletin for the credit, and IBHS for the standard itself. When you are ready, a free quote on your own roof is one form away.
Your request goes straight to a licensed local roofing contractor serving Lafayette and Baton Rouge, usually within about an hour during the day, not a national lead list.
Talk to someone who builds these
Tell us your parish and your situation: chasing the next grant round, re-roofing anyway, or feeling insurance pressure. An independent, licensed Louisiana contractor experienced with FORTIFIED work looks at the roof and puts the price in writing. Free, and the referral fee never touches your price.
The business model is on the how we make money page.
Why this decision is live in Louisiana right now
Discounts, now and pending
Louisiana law already requires an actuarially justified FORTIFIED discount from your insurer, and many carriers publish one today. LDI Regulation 136 would add mandatory benchmarks by region and designation level for policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2027, but it is still pending final publication. Both, dated, in the status card above. The discount lane, explained.
Roof-age pressure
Louisiana insurers tighten underwriting as roofs pass 10 to 15 years, and since 2025 they may nonrenew up to five percent of long-held policies each year. If your roof is due anyway, the FORTIFIED question costs a fraction more and unlocks the other layers. Roof age and your policy.
Parish lines decide the grant
Fortify Homes eligibility is set by parish, one round at a time, and the list changes. Your address is the only thing that settles it, and the LDI portal is where it gets settled, not a list reprinted on a roofing site. Our city pages say which parish each city sits in.
What the standard actually requires
Sealed roof deck
The signature requirement. Taped or sealed seams cut water intrusion by up to 95 percent when covering blows off, per IBHS. It is the difference between shingle damage and a ruined interior.
Ring-shank nailing
The whole deck re-nailed with 8d ring-shank nails, roughly doubling uplift resistance against the wind speeds Lafayette and Baton Rouge design for.
Independent verification
A certified evaluator, not the roofer, documents the work before IBHS issues the designation your insurer and the tax credit rely on. How evaluation works.

What it costs, and what happens after you send it
- What does a FORTIFIED roof cost in Louisiana?
- Two numbers stacked. The base is the replacement you were going to need anyway: $3.75 to $10.00 per square foot, commonly between $8,000 and $15,000 for a medium-sized home, per Southern Home Improvement and Daigle Roofing (contractor-published marketing figures rather than survey data). On top of that, IBHS, the institute that writes the standard, estimates the FORTIFIED features add roughly $1,000 to $3,000 on a typical 2,000 square foot home, with a published worked scenario putting the added features at $700 to $1,700. The evaluator is a separate line at $300 to $600 (an institute-published example, not a quote). A grant round, a tax credit and the statutory insurance discount can each work against that total. None of them is priced here, because the amounts and the eligibility change and the agencies own them. The Louisiana cost guide walks through the whole stack.
- How fast will someone get back to me?
- Your request goes to an independent local roofing contractor, usually within about an hour during the day. That contractor then contacts you to look at the roof and price the work on their own schedule.
- What work is covered?
- Roof replacement, FORTIFIED roof installation, FORTIFIED roof evaluation, hurricane roof upgrades, and roof inspection for insurance. See every service.
Only the contractor who walks your roof can price it.
Questions Louisiana homeowners ask
- What is a FORTIFIED roof?
- FORTIFIED is a construction standard from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. The Roof level means a sealed roof deck, ring-shank nailing, locked-down edges, and impact-resistant covering, verified by an independent certified evaluator, with the designation renewed every five years.
- Is the Louisiana grant open right now?
- The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program, run by the Louisiana Department of Insurance, may offer a grant toward FORTIFIED roof work. It runs in rounds, and each round sets its own registration window, eligible-parish list and terms, so whether a round is open and whether your address qualifies are questions only LDI can answer. This site does not publish round status or amounts, because they change. Check ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, and join the LDI alert list, which announces new rounds directly.
- What do I get without winning a grant?
- Two things that do not depend on a lottery. Louisiana has a state income tax credit for qualified FORTIFIED roof expenses (La. R.S. 47:6044), and you may qualify for it. It is nonrefundable, it has its own rules about which costs count, and the Department of Revenue sets and updates the terms. And insurance discounts are required by state law: LDI Regulation 136 is proposed, not adopted. The LDI summary report of July 13, 2026 announces intent to submit it to the Office of the State Register for final publication in the August 2026 Louisiana Register, subject to legislative oversight, and the regulation takes effect only on that publication. Its text no longer fixes any percentage: amendments answering carrier comments removed the twenty to thirty percent range requirement and instead tie mandatory discounts to the rates LDI publishes on its own website. The benchmark table LDI has published runs 16 to 49 percent on the hurricane portion of premium by region and designation level, and the regulation, once effective, would make published rates mandatory for policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2027.
- How much more does FORTIFIED cost than a normal re-roof?
- IBHS estimates the FORTIFIED Roof features add roughly $1,000 to $3,000 on a typical home, and contractor-published figures in Louisiana run from a few percent up to 20 percent over a standard replacement. If the roof is due anyway, the upgrade is a fraction of the total job.
- Does this site do the roofing?
- No. LA Fortified Roofing is a free referral service, not a contractor. An independent, licensed Louisiana roofer experienced with the FORTIFIED standard quotes the job and does the work, and we are paid a referral fee that never raises your price.
